Several in-person and online programmes offer their students the opportunity to become geographers. But, what does a geographer do?

In-person and online programmes offer their students many opportunities in different ways. They can deepen their already-acquired knowledge by enrolling in in-person and online master's degrees, or they can just take a look into a new field by earning certificates. Whatever the case might be, just by earning any of the in-person and online master's degrees available in a field, they increase their opportunities to perform different jobs.

Of course, you need a profound knowledge of geography to become a geographer, so it’s not like any of the in-person and online programmes available in that field is going to prepare you for the job. However, in-person and online master's degrees will do the trick.

But let’s get to the point: What does a Geographer do?

A geographer is a professional who studies the earth and its components such as the land, inhabitants, and characteristics. Of course, studying its inhabitants also means that these professionals often take a look at policies and cultural practices and how they impact and depend on geography.

So, as you might have deduced by now, it’s not an easy task. Therefore, geographers deepen their knowledge by pursuing in-person and online master's degrees in the field of geography. This doesn’t mean that other in-person and online programmes won’t help, but they surely won’t be enough.

The daily life of a geographer involves gathering data through field observation, satellite imagery, surveys, and other qualitative methods. They also investigate and write reports about their results, which might later impact in the way maps are delimited and designed, or in the way a policy is established. Finally, and as stated before, they also study the earth’s characteristics and where they take place, trying to determine their causes and consequences.

Therefore, pursuing and earning any of the in-person and online master's degrees available in the field of geography will prepare you to perform all these tasks correctly.

Where can you enrol in in-person and online master's degrees in geography?

In South Africa, the amount of in-person and online programmes available is increasing daily. However, the best option might be the Master of Science in Geography offered by the Nelson Mandela University. This is an in-person master’s degree programme (sorry, online master’s degrees fans) and it has a length of one year.
